Facts about Saaremaa Velotuur

•The oldest cycling tour in Baltic States and Nordic countries;

•The first Saaremaa Velotuur was held in 1957 and was located only in Saaremaa island. Since 1998 the competition is held across the country;


•In 1982 there was only 10 competitors;

•In 2007(50th ) there was<147 competitors from 21 cycling teams;


•Noted winners through the history:
Aavo Pikkus Olympic winner in Montreal 1976
Romans Vainðteins Mens World Champion 2000
Jaan Kirsipuu Four time stage winner of Tour de France in 1995 and 1999; 6 days in yellow jersey in 1999;

•Different countries represented in Saaremaa Cycling Tour history:
Netherlands, Egypt, India, Finland, Sweden, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, USA, South- Africa, New Zealand, Great Britain and Italy;

•The biggest challenge and pearl of Saaremaa Velotuur is traditional stage witch includes 7,2 km gravel sectsion. As exception the gravel road sectin was dropped only in 1985 when competitors were lack of tires because of the financial causes;

•Saaremaa Velotuur was cancelled only once – in 1990 when all Soviet Union was suffering from petrol crises;


•During half century Saaremaa Velotuur has had 2830 competitors total.
